On the fourth Thursday of each November in the United States of America there is a national holiday observed for what is known these days as Thanksgiving.
While the history of the holiday brings passionate discussion about past sins of the US government & the settling of this country, most of us use it as an excuse to visit family & friends whilst over-indulging in “blessings” of food we have become accustomed to over the years.
The Friday after Thanksgiving has become what is known as “Black Friday”. A day where, it can be argued, we toss out the love & kindness from the day before while we fight with other shoppers to get the best deals on stuff for the next holiday – Christmas. Our holidays have become more about the desire of business to make more money rather than celebrate humanity. This really isn’t unexpected. I mean, we live in a society where capitalism is king. People gain notoriety & make news based on how much wealth they have accumulated.
If you are guessing this is a rant on the evils of capitalism – then you are wrong. The good & evil of capitalism are two sides of the same coin, and I’m not going to discuss it here, as it doesn’t really have anything to do with Thanksgiving, other than to say we should be aware of the influence it has on perception, as well as, the other parts of our life.
